Unbelievable

Rebecca told me about a story that was featured on the news. This new phenomenon is called unschooling. Basically, the unstudent makes all of their own decisions of what they are going to do throughout each day. If they want to learn something, all that they have to do is look it up online. Also, if they decide they want to go out and play, there is nothing to stop them.

I think this is wrong on many levels. I didn't review the entire website, and I remain unsure of all the details. Still, this doesn't teach the youth how to think and learn as a group. It encourages anti-social behavior. Also, when the kids grow up, as the tend to do, how are they going to cope on the university level? Better yet, how are they going to hold down a job? It is not exactly acceptable to have playtime in the middle of the work day, and if they have no experience working with others, it will be miserable for all parties.

Also, as a child, they may be unaware of reputable websites that are out there on the internet. The internet and magazines are filled with information written by people or groups with zero credentials. This just means that they may be teaching themselves the wrong information.

Have you ever tried to look up mathematical or chemical equations and calculations? There isn't much out there, and some of the ones that exist, that I have seen, are quite vague.

Some things are just better with a teacher.
